Established in 1917 by provisions in the will of Joseph Pulitzer, a Hungarian-born newspaper publisher, the first ceremony took place in 1917. To date, more than $2 million has been awarded to outstanding journalists and writers. The Pulitzers cover various categories, including public service, feature writing, and commentary.
4. Fields Medal
Often called the 'Nobel of Mathematics,' the Fields Medal is considered one of the most prestigious awards in mathematics. Established in 1936 by a Canadian mathematician, the first medal was awarded to Leonhard Euler for his work on topology and calculus. The prize has been awarded only every four years since its inception, with the latest award taking place in 2018. Notably, the Fields Medal carries no cash award, as it is considered more of a recognition than an honor.
5. Tony Awards
The Tony Awards are one of the most prestigious awards in theater and musical performances. Named after the American playwright and director Antoinette Perry, the first ceremony took place in 1947 to recognize excellence in live Broadway theater. The Tony Award has since become synonymous with excellence in American theater and is often considered a benchmark for achievement in the industry. With over $2 million awarded annually, the Tony Awards remain one of the highest honors in theatrical performances.
